UK refurbished phone retailers rated

Ratings come from more than 20 years working inside the UK mobile phone trade, not from customer reviews or paid placements. They cover how honestly each retailer grades, how returns work, stock quality, value and customer service.

Back Market is the benchmark. After 23 years in the industry, I've seen a lot of refurb retailers come and go — Back Market have set the standard for how grading should be done. Their 'Good' really is good, their 'Excellent' is genuinely close to new. The 30-day money-back guarantee is among the best in the market and their customer service handles disputes fairly.

Reboxed are the best for Like New condition phones — their refurbishment process is meticulous and their Excellent grade genuinely looks unused. They're slightly newer to the market than Back Market but have built an impressive reputation quickly. Carbon-neutral delivery is a nice touch. Slightly smaller stock range than Back Market.

John Lewis Certified Refurbished is the gold standard for peace of mind. Their customer service is exceptional and their returns process is the easiest of any retailer on this list — you can return to store, no questions asked. The trade-off is price: you'll pay a premium for that security. Ideal for people buying a phone as a gift or for someone less comfortable with technology.

Currys Certified is the high street answer to John Lewis refurb — similar level of quality control, similar premium pricing, but with the advantage of being everywhere. 500+ stores means you can walk in, see the phone, and walk out same day. Their Certified Refurbished standard is genuine and consistent. The trade-off is price — you'll pay noticeably more than Back Market for the same condition. Worth it if you want the in-store experience and instant purchase.

SmartFoneStore is a solid UK specialist that doesn't get enough recognition. Their Grade A condition is genuinely impressive — phones come well packaged with decent accessories. They carry a wide range including Pro Max models that smaller specialists often skip, and their Grade B and C pricing is competitive. Popular on HotUKDeals, which tells you deal-hunters have found them trustworthy. Grading is honest and consistent.

Music Magpie are a solid, trustworthy operation and often the cheapest legitimate option for mid-range phones. Their grading is consistent and they're a proper UK business with real customer protection. Where they fall slightly short is customer service speed — resolving issues can take longer than Back Market. But for a simple purchase, they're excellent value.

Giffgaff Marketplace is peer-to-peer but unusually well regulated for a consumer marketplace. Every seller is verified, phones must pass a functionality check before listing, and Giffgaff's buyer guarantee covers you if the phone isn't as described. Their grade labels — Pristine, Good, Reasonable — are applied fairly consistently. Particularly good for iPhone as Giffgaff's customer base skews Apple-heavy, meaning lots of well-maintained second-hand iPhones at competitive prices.

Fonehouse have been in the mobile industry a long time and it shows — they know phones properly, not just as a side line. Their Pristine grade is accurate and they're particularly strong on the latest flagships. Good at covering new model launches quickly, so if you want a recently-released phone in refurb condition Fonehouse is often one of the first to have it. Pricing is fair without being the absolute cheapest.

4Gadgets are a reliable mid-tier UK specialist with good prices and honest grading. Their Excellent condition is close to Like New and they describe cosmetic issues clearly in listings. Particularly good value on Samsung flagships where they often undercut Back Market slightly. Customer service is fine but can be slower than the bigger operators — expect 2-3 days for responses rather than same day.

Mazuma are a reliable, straightforward UK operation that doesn't get enough credit. Their Pristine grade is genuinely impressive and they're particularly good for recent flagship models. Smaller stock than Back Market or Music Magpie, which means they sometimes don't have the exact model or storage you want — but when they do, it's a good buy.

Envirofone are one of the longest-established names in UK phone recycling — they've been buying and selling phones since before most refurb retailers existed. Their big strength is the budget end: Poor and Fair condition phones at prices you won't find elsewhere, including 'Spares & Repairs' and 'Faulty' listings that are ideal for people who want to fix phones themselves. For Good and Excellent condition they're competitive but not the strongest. Their environmental credentials are genuine — proper recycling and refurbishment rather than greenwashing.

Argos refurb is more limited than Currys or John Lewis but has one big advantage — reserve online and collect same day from one of nearly 1,000 locations. Quality is consistent though the grading terminology is vague ('Refurbished' covers a wide range). Good for families who need a phone quickly and want the security of a major brand behind it. Stock rotates fast so availability changes frequently.

Amazon Renewed is safer than eBay but less consistent than Back Market. The Amazon Renewed Guarantee (replacement or refund within 90 days if not satisfied) is genuinely good and Amazon's returns process is the easiest of any online retailer. Grading quality depends on the supplier, so Renewed Premium is reliably good but Renewed Good can vary. The 90-day guarantee is worth a lot.

Laptops Direct are primarily a laptop and tech retailer who also carry a solid selection of refurbished phones at keen prices. Their Grade A and Grade B classifications are applied honestly and stock quality is generally high. They're worth checking for flagship models where they sometimes have stock others don't. Not a pure phone specialist, so the range is smaller — but prices are often competitive and they have genuine tech retail experience behind them.

CEX are a legitimate and well-established retailer with the major advantage of physical stores — you can inspect the phone before buying, which counts for a lot. However their grading is where I'd urge caution. A B Grade from CEX can vary quite a bit depending on which store processed it. Online is more consistent than in-store. Their 24-month warranty is market-leading though.

eBay is a marketplace, not a retailer — and that distinction matters. Quality varies enormously depending on who the seller is. Certified Refurbished listings from top-rated sellers are generally fine, but the grading is inconsistent and disputes can be frustrating. The upside is price — eBay is often the cheapest option. Filter for 'Certified Refurbished' and sellers with 99%+ feedback and you'll usually be fine.
